Could You Have Diabetes? The Life-Saving Diet
11/03/2008 - By Richard W. Grant, M.D., M.P.H. as told to Sarah Robbins
We know more than ever just how crucial the link is between diet and diabetes, and three recent studies have shed new light on exactly what we should - and shouldn't - eat to reduce our risk.
More Produce: One study of nearly 22,000 adults in England found that the incidence of diabetes was a whopping 22 percent lower among people who consumed the most fruits and vegetables. Less Soda & Juice: Researchers from Boston University discovered that African American women who drank at least two regular soft drinks or two glasses of fruit juice a day had an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Smaller Portions: A study at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seatrtle looked at the effect of a low-fat diet on diabetes risk. Trimming the fat in one's diet had little effect - it's eating less overall that really makes the difference.
